In 2009, Spartan Computer Services will enter its seventeenth year of
delivering best-in-industry Point-of-Sale services to the restaurant industry.
In 1993, Flagstar Corporation, consisting of Denny's, Hardee's, and El Pollo Loco, decided to outsource their field services organization. Jack Steenhausen, the current President of Spartan Computer Services, formed an investment group to compete for the outsourcing contract. The proposal, one that called for a three year maintenance contract in exchange for acquiring Flagstar's assets and personnel, was accepted.
In the mid-1990's, Spartan Computer Services developed and implemented long range business plans that called for the company to expand beyond a “one account company,” into a national provider of restaurant technology services. SCS leadership believed that the company’s success at Denny’s Corporation, combined with the company’s designation as an “IBM Authorized Point-of-Sale Services Provider", were marketable attributes
Large regional restaurant companies such as Steak ‘n Shake and Frisch’s signed Point-of-Sale maintenance contracts with SCS in 1999, enabling SCS to provide comprehensive maintenance coverage throughout the southeast and Midwest. Later in 1999, west coast restaurant companies such as Marie Callender’s and El Torito also signed multi-year agreements. This growth, eventually provided the necessary business conditions for SCS to open a west coast office in Irvine, California. Soon, SCS attracted the interest of national restaurant companies such as Brinker International, Darden Restaurants, Denny’s Restaurants, Panera Bread, and Arby’s Restaurants, and ultimately were awarded major services contracts with each of the mentioned groups.
